. >>> let's go to jessica yellin, she's getting new information about the fiscal cliff stand-off, what are you learning? >> reporter: i'm learning that president obama and house speaker john boehner had a phone conversation late today. we do not have a fiscal deal. there's been no significant movement as a result of this, it's meaningful, the two men have not spoken in a week exactly. their last phone call was last wednesday, as you know, speaker boehner presented a plan on monday and after that was rejected by the president. in an interview, there was no communication between the white house and republicans until this phone call between these two men. wolf, this comes the same day that secretary geithner said publicly for the first time, that the u.s. would be willing to go over the cliff if republicans do not agree to raise tax rates on the top two percent of earners. it's my understanding that republicans have not agreed to raise those rates and the white house is not negotiating essentially, wolf, until they see republicans make that move. >> jeszic ka, the things obviously could b

correspondent barbara starr is joining us with the latest new threat on the possible use of chemical weapons. >> reporter: wolf, the challenge is for the obama administration to figure out exactly what bashar al assad is up to with his deadly arsenal. the horror remains unspeakable. 25 years ago saddam hussein unleashed one of the worst poison gas attacks in history. thousands were killed. now, in syria, u.s. concerns are growing by the hour that bashar al assad may be planning the same thing against his citizens. >> the intelligence that we have raises serious concerns that this is being considered. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence shows syria has mixed chemical compounds needed to make a deadly agent that can quickly kill thousands. >> the united states and our allies are facing the prospect of an imminent use of weapons of mass destruction in syria. and this may be the last warning we get. >> reporter: the u.s. is not precisely saying what the syrians are doing, but there are two ways of mixing elements to make a saren filled weapon. >> you have to handle it very, very carefully. a drop wil

regime would actually use deadly gas on its own people. up to this, up to this chemical weapons news, what was the u.s. military's official stance on action in syria? >> well, you know, the obama administration has been taking the lead on working the diplomatic frant, diplomat ic front, if you will, what they have been doing for months and months for now is trying to get assad to go by putting diplomatic pressure on, to a large extent, working through russia, obviously, which is one of assad's last allies, a lot of chat out there could assad get asign lum somewhere, something like that. by all accounts they have been willing to continue with the diplomatic track until this development. now, we're not saying there is going to be military action, but certainly the military planning, being updated, the options being updated, because now of this movement of chemical weapons, and a very good understanding, they tell us, of the locations of where they are, and the intent, possible intent to use them, that's what's leading to this potential change in something that everyone is concerned abo
